Stephen Higgins MSOM, LAc (he/him)
Are you depressed, struggling to bridge the gap between understanding your patterns and actually changing them? Are you suffering from anxiety, perhaps having difficulty knowing what you really want from your life and your relationships? Have you even gone as far as to spend significant time and money on traditional talk therapy but didn’t find it deep or effective enough? Sounds like you need something different!
I believe that all people can find greater fulfillment through getting to know themselves and their loved ones better. I also believe that “getting to know oneself” is a process that takes time, that doing so often requires the support of a therapeutic relationship. I also believe that the deepest forms of change happen when therapies respect the wisdom of the mind, the body, and the spirit. I’ve been described as “grounding,” “loving,” and “calm.” Feel free to read more of what people have to say about me and my Dragon Rises colleagues here .
I provide effective somatic therapy to individuals, couples, and families, including those who want support with their monogamous, “open,” poly, or ENM relationships.
I start new clients off with a free discovery call so that we can check in on what you’re hoping to get out of your work with me, and to make sure that what I offer can meet your current needs. For new individual clients, I then also offer a free, 60 minute consultation so that I can get to know more about what brings you into therapy, so you can ask me more questions about me and my work, and so we can both determine if we’d be a good fit for diving into a therapy journey together. I offer counseling that is inclusive, trauma-informed, and is based in my training in holistic psychotherapy modalities and deeply influenced by my 12+ years of clinical experience as a Licensed Acupuncturist. This work will make deep, embodied, and lasting changes in your life.
My mission is to help clients forge deep connections with themselves and engage in meaningful relationships.
I’ll help you uncover your own understanding of who you are, what you want, and how you can better show up for yourself and others. By “slowing down the action” and helping you focus on the underlying attachment dynamics that make up the dance of your intimate couple or family relationships, you’ll earn more loving and mutual relationships together. Book a free discovery call today, and we’ll take the first step toward meeting your deeper needs which compel you to grow—in yourself and in relationship!
Please note that I maintain only a limited number of reduced rate treatment slots for folks experiencing financial hardship.
Education
I have been licensed to practice Chinese medicine in Oregon since 2012 and have pursued training in Body-Centered Psychotherapy (including the Hakomi method) since 2016. When working with counseling clients, I bring a warmhearted approach to the therapeutic relationship through mindfulness-based and somatically-oriented therapy. When treating Chinese medicine patients, I utilize manual therapies like therapeutic touch and acupuncture; employ precise diagnostics including Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis; and I supplement clients’ in-clinic treatments with powerfully effective herbal medicine.
Counseling
My counseling background includes the META Comprehensive Training, a two-year-long course in Hakomi and allied methods of Mindfulness-Based Somatic Psychotherapy offered through the META Institute/Hakomi Institute of Oregon; I also completed two additional years as a Teaching Assistant at the META Institute. I have completed advanced trainings in Hakomi Therapy, Primary Attachment Psychotherapy, and the Re-Creation of the Self Model of Human Systems (a “parts work” model akin to Internal Family Systems or IFS). I continually receive training and consultation from experienced mentors in the Somatic Psychotherapy field, and I am currently completing a Masters degree in Counseling Education through Adams State University. I have been seeing counseling clients since 2018.
Chinese Medicine
For nearly a decade prior to formally studying Chinese medicine, I devoured books on the subject, received countless treatments, and had the opportunity to form close relationships with practitioner-mentors. I began my formal education at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 2007, and I hold a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) from the National College of Natural Medicine(NCNM), 2012. I also teach in the field of Chinese medicine, regularly offer case consultation to budding Chinese medicine practitioners, and hold the honor of having been a faculty member at NUNM.
Classical and Modern Chinese
I have achieved a high level of fluency in Mandarin Chinese. I do not currently, but I may someday begin to offer medical and mental healthcare in Mandarin. I studied Classical Chinese at NCNM, pursued Post-Baccalaureate coursework in Chinese Language and Literature at Portland State University, and completed intensive immersion-style study of Mandarin and the Classical Chinese language in Taipei, Taiwan at both the International Chinese Language Program (National Taiwan University) and at National Taiwan Normal University.
